- 1. INTRODUCTION
- ---------------
-
- Thank you for using TuneUp 2.0. TuneUp is a powerful, yet simple,
- Internet-based PC service solution that automatically keeps your
- Windows 95 system up-to-date with the latest driver and
- application updates and bug fixes available on the Internet.
- TuneUp gives you quick and easy access to over 3,000 application
- and hardware driver updates, from several hundred major hardware
- manufacturers and software publishers. TuneUp quickly and
- securely profiles your system's hardware and software, then
- immediately generates a list of the latest updates and bug fixes
- available on the Internet. Just select the updates you want and
- TuneUp downloads and installs the right ones. It's incredibly
- easy to use.
-
- Please note that the Updates suggested for your system by TuneUp
- are based on the files which make up your software and your
- hardware drivers. If you run multiple operating systems or if
- you have installed then uninstalled a large amount of software,
- it is possible that you may be offered updates for software or
- hardware that you no longer have. Updates should be applied
- based on what you actually have on your system. If you have any
- questions as to whether a particular update is appropriate for
- your system, please contact the software or hardware
- manufacturer, or the provider of the Update software.
-
-
- 2. TROUBLESHOOTING
- ------------------
-
- Following are some troubleshooting suggestions in case you run
- into any functionality not working as you would expect. Please
- look through these troubleshooting steps prior to attempting to
- contact Technical Support, as these may address the problem you
- are seeing.
-
- - If you encounter problems when connecting to the server:
- 1) Check to make sure that you have an active internet connection
- -- e.g. Can your browser load a web page from some site on the
- internet? If you cannot load a web page, then you have some
- other internet connectivity problem and need to check with
- your ISP or system administrator.
- 2) Assuming that you have an active connection, check to make
- sure that you (or your ISP) can "see" the TuneUp 2.0 server.
- To do this, open a DOS session, and at the prompt type "ping
- tud.tuneup.com" (without the quotes), then press ENTER. If
- you begin to see a number of lines with "reply" statistics,
- then you are able to "see" the server correctly. If you
- receive an error such as "bad ip address" or get back nothing
- at all, then you have some other internet connectivity problem
- and need to check with your ISP or system administrator.
- 3) If you have an active connection and can ping the server,
- then your ISP (or your firewall if you are on a LAN) may be
- blocking the port (6670) that is required for TuneUp to
- communicate with its server, the TuneUp server may be too
- busy or unavailable at that time, or the general internet
- "load" in your area may be too great to allow communication
- with the server at that time. Simply try again later, and if
- the connection continuously fails please contact your ISP or
- system administrator to determine if port 6670 is being
- blocked and whether it can be opened.
- 3a)If you wish to determine on your own whether your ISP or LAN
- connection allows you to communicate over port 6670, the method
- to do this is to attempt to "telnet" through the port. Open a
- "telnet" client, and in the "host name" field, type
- "tud.tuneup.com" without the quotes. In the "port" field,
- type "6670" without the quotes, then click OK, or otherwise
- attempt to connect depending on your telnet client.
- If you get an "hourglass" mouse cursor for some period of time,
- followed by an error message such as "connect failed", then
- your 6670 port is probably blocked. If, however, the title bar
- of your telnet client changes to "Telnet - tud.tuneup.com" or
- otherwise indicates that the connection is successful, then the
- port is open. Note that you will not get any sort of login
- prompt from the server.
-
-
- 3. LAST-MINUTE ADDITIONS AND KNOWN ISSUES
- -----------------------------------------
-
- - Our Carkeys license verification component may require access
- to the Carkeys server in order to validate your TuneUp.com
- subscription after the initial licensed usage period has elapsed.
- This communication requires a "live" Internet connection, and
- takes place over port 25451. If you are prompted with a
- "TuneUp.com" dialog which asks "Have you already subscribed to
- the TuneUp.com service?" this indicates that the Carkeys
- component is about to communicate with the ck.tuneup.com server
- in order to validate your subscription. If, after entering your
- account information, you receive the message "There was a problem
- with the TuneUp.com server or the network," this may indicate
- that you either don't have a connection to the internet, or your
- LAN or ISP has blocked port 25451 on their firewall. The only
- workarounds for the time being are to either contact your Network
- Administrator or ISP and have this port opened, or return to the
- TuneUp.com site and download a new copy of TuneUp each time
- the product expires. The expiration frequency may vary between
- monthly and yearly, depending on the subscription you have on
- TuneUp.com
-
- - TuneUp 2.0 is a Windows 95-only product. It is not intended
- to be compatible with Windows NT, nor any Pre-Release or Beta
- operating systems, including Windows 98. There are known
- problems associated with running TuneUp on Windows 98. Any
- known problems will be addressed in a future release of TuneUp,
- as Windows 98 comes closer to release.
